    Kaaimans Restaurant in Wilderness

Kaaimans Restaurant opened their doors on the 15th of December and is situated next to the Kaaimans River under the the bridge on the pass that makes out a part of the N2 between George and Wilderness going towards Knysna. They’ve been in business now for just over 6 months and thousands of people has visited them in this time. I’m always excited to explore and try new things in my area and I love supporting local.

What makes Kaaimans Restaurant different ?

They are aiming to be an adventure destination where you can spend an entire day with your family. So besides their breakfast, lunch and dinner offerings they also have kayaking and a little birdie told me that another activity will be available soon. During summer your kids are more than welcome to splash around in the water while you enjoy your lunch.

There is a breathtaking view over the Kaaimans river, on a quiet day the water can be a flat as a mirror with the mountain sides and forest trees reflecting. The Kaaimans river is famous for it’s dark coloured water thanks to all the tree roots coming down the mountain. It’s is extremely rich in minerals. If you are up for kayaking you can see the waterfall as well. I’ve done this before and even took a tip, just a warning, even in the heat of February, the water is so cold!

They also feature local and nation wide artists on their stage. They’ve had big names like Valliant Swart and Another Universe singer, Arno Carstens. Both were sold out shows. Elvis Blue is one of the events to look forward to later this year.

    What’s on their menu ?

You’ll find a huge variety of items on the menu from jalapeno poppers to veggie spring rolls and an assortment of freestyle flat breads for starters. For mains you can choose from a large selection of pizzas, all named after local Wilderness hot spots. Their burgers, crumbed chicken strips, ribs and fresh hake and chips are some of my favourites but my top of the list must try item has to be the calamari strips! For dessert you can choose your poison from their milkshake and ice cream bar.

You can view their full menu over here on their website.

    Drinks and more

Their drinks menu boasts with a couple of South African craft gins like Six Dogs and Phantom Gin (made in Knysna) As well as the Black Mountain Karoo Floral gin on tap. If you love craft beer you can choose between Jack Black and Sowetan Cherry Ale. I’m not a beer or ale drinker but the cherry ale tastes like melted fizz pops.

If you’re a coffee love, they have a locally sourced coffee that is to die for. And this coming from a self proclaimed coffee snob.

    Kaaimans Restaurant Decor

The decor is absolutely breathtaking. It was really thought through to be practical, eye catchy and not to take away from the beautiful surroundings of the private nature reserve where it’s located. The sun roof lets a lot of natural light in during the day. At night the restaurant turns into a magical vision of fairy lights that covers the entire ceiling. The restaurant is fully wheelchair accessible and they even have a wheelchair specific toilet cubical which I haven’t seen at other establishments in the area.

They’ve recently installed two fireplaces as well. This will create a really cozy atmosphere during the colder months.

If you are ever in the Garden Route and you’re looking for a dining experience I highly recommend that you give Kaaimans a visit! But make sure to go early. If it’s a weekend or in season day as they are almost always fully packed during the afternoon rush.
