How to Survive a Long Distance Relationship

So here we are, it’s nearing the end of April and my blog is as bare as an end of the month food cupboard and the lack of posts is mainly due to time management. Working a full-time job and having only weekends for myself and to do what I want (and need) has had me mostly surviving my long distance marriage. I really need to make an effort to find a better balance in my life and post more frequently!

In the meantime I would love to share with you guys how I have been surviving my long distance marriage (for the third time in 4 years) without completely losing my mind – honestly I near the edge of the cliff sometimes though, I guess if I didn’t I wouldn’t be human, or a woman for that matter. So here goes:

Trust, trust, trust
Without trust attempting any long distance relationship would be like taking on a hive of angry bees, you should just know you will get stung, multiple times.

Don’t be clingy
Give your partner breathing space (yes I know, how much more space do you need than 11 000km!?) You don’t have to spend every single spare minute you have on WhatsApp or Skype with each other. Life is stressful, get out there and do fun things, yes it’s OK to have fun by yourself, and it’s OK to let your partner have fun by him/herself. Having fun doesn’t mean that you are better off by yourself, it just means you can enjoy life.

Set a date goal
Setting a date when you will be reunited and work towards it, it will help keep your sanity in tact, sometimes this can be really hard to achieve, but I feel it’s important to have something to look forward to.

Have date nights
Yes you read correctly,  this is where having Netflix comes in really handy, watch shows and movies together. A dual screen Netflix account can be used in 2 different countries so you can enjoy watching together. Getting takeout from the same chain restaurant and just enjoying a meal together will help keeping things real.

Be naughty
Send sexy pictures and flirtatious messages, this will keep the romance and passion flame burning throughout your separation.

Don’t forget to say “I love you” and never forget that it’s fine to feel sad and miss each other like mad, you will have really good and really bad days.

On a last note,  other fun things the husband and I like doing to feel in sync is sharing pictures of silly day-to-day things like our food and funny faces. We love doing online shopping, by creating wishlists on varies online stores and now and again ordering something for each other. Hopefully everything works out and I can be with my hubby soon, but till then, here is to time management!

This makes me think of my own life. I also live away from my husband and I’m currently 5 months pregnant. It’s the most difficult time as he hasn’t even been around for any of my scans which is so sad.

Reading this actually helps me feel a little better knowing I’m not alone in this and there’s others like me out there, you sometimes feel so alone.

I think it’s important to be understanding and have a positive outlook on the situation, I mean it could be worse the man could be jobless and sitting at home. Which is one of the biggest contributes to marital problem.

Keep loving and wanting each other. Never let the flame die out and ways communicate about everything even the silly things.

I am really glad that my post helps you feel a bit better and it’s comforting to know that one is not alone. I wish you all the best with your pregnancy and I really hope your hubby can make it for one of your scans!

I totally agree with having a positive outlook! and it’s totally fine to feel all your feelings, being happy, being sad and sometimes even being being angry. Communication is really important I agree 🙂
